The Kingdom of Bhutan

Nestled in the Himalayas is the idyllic nation of Bhutan, which emerged from isolation in the 1970’s and has since embraced a policy of strictly controlled tourism and development. Bhutan is a rare gem. In 2007 approximately 20,000 tourists were permitted to enter and taste the delights of Bhutan’s wonderful Buddhist culture, marvel at her magnificent scenery, trek through a stunning array of mountains and valleys and view some of the world’s rarest flora and fauna in a totally unspoiled environment. Whether you are a bird-watcher, trekker, weaver, culture seeker or scenery lover… Bhutan is a must see destination....

When to Travel? ...No matter what time of year you travel to Bhutanvwe will provide you with a rewarding and enriching experience. Bhutan has four distinct seasons. The spring season (late March, April & May) and autumn season (late September, October and November) are the most popular times to visit with generally clear, mild weather, excellent scenery, lower rainfall and a range of festivals called Tshechus and Dromchoes. The winter season (December to mid March) brings snow to the higher regions however the southern regions and main valleys where visitors generally travel are considerably warmer. Paro and Thimphu normally experience only light dustings of snow so still well worth a visit with mid December to mid-January normally offering cool, pleasant days and clear skies although temperatures fall below zero at night.

Mandatory Travel Package Structure....all tourists must travel on pre-planned, pre-paid, guided package arrangements. You do NOT have to travel as part of a group and can enjoy flexibility to wander about Bhutan’s towns and countryside with a reasonable degree of freedom. However it is not possible to be fully independent and you must always travel with your guide and driver between towns and villages and stay in your pre-booked hotel accommodation. The Bhutanese are extremely hospitable and your guide will be a valuable asset and add to the enjoyment of your stay immensely.

You Must Book Well In Advance....entry to Bhutan is largely controlled by the relatively small number of guides, drivers, cars and hotel rooms and of course airline seats on Drukair. To ensure you can obtain space on flights, and also obtain pre-approval for your entry visa in time for your departure, it is strongly recommended you make your travel arrangements for Bhutan at least 3 months in advance.
